Government Documents Classification

Another classification system, called SuDocs (Superintendent of Documents), is used for many government documents. The system is based on organizing publications by the issuing agency, e.g. D for Defense Department, ED for Education Department, S for State Department.

Exceptions are call numbers beginning with Y. Y1 call numbers are general publications of Congress, both House and Senate Documents and Reports. Y3 represents independent boards and commissions, while Y4 call numbers are House and Senate Committee hearings and publications.

SuDocs call numbers have a colon (:) near the middle of the number. It is important to note that, unlike LC call numbers, the periods in SuDocs are not decimals, but each segment of the call number should be read as a whole number.

C 61.34:987 is the call number for U.S. Industrial Outlook.
